Pathways Summer School

Headwater-dependent systems resilience

The PATHWAYS program, in collaboration with the University of Chile and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Las Condas campus), is organizing the summer school course in Santiago, Chile from January 3 – January 14, 2022. We invite Chilean students to join the summer school using the link below.

Course overview and objectives

The goal of the Partnerships Along the Headwaters of the Americas for Young Scientists Program (PATHWAYS Program) is to contribute to the development of a diverse and globally engaged workforce with the training and experiences needed to address interdisciplinary, international, and interorganizational (I3) water resources challenges throughout the Americas. This class represents a key component of the emerging Transect of the Americas Research Network, which includes twelve institutions in six countries stretching from the Northern Rockies in Canada to the Southern Andes in Chile. This course represents the first step in this process as we aim to provide training to graduate students on socio-ecological systems (SES) thinking, resilience principles, and I3 concepts to prepare a cohort of students for advancing knowledge of headwaters and headwater dependent systems (HDSs).

Course activities and outcomes include:

(1) Develop students’ mastery of the principles and practices of I3 research;

(2) Provide training on HDSs including systems thinking, resilience principles, data collection and analysis, and modeling;

(3) Complete a case study project based on Aculeo Lake; and

(4) Connect student research to resilience principles and research on headwater-dependent systems.
